Shivaji II & Tarabai (1700-1707)
After the death of Rajaram, the Maratha empire was divided into two parts – Satara under Shahu and Kolhapur under Tarabai and Shivaji II.
Early Life
- 9 June 1696: Shivaji Bhonsle II was born.
- His father was Rajaram I.
- His mother was Tarabai.
- He was the fourth Chhatrapati King of the Maratha empire.
Reign
- 1700: After the death of Rajaram, Shivaji II ascended the throne.
- But in the real sense, all the governance was handled by his mother Tarabai.
- 1701-1706: After Jinji, Aurangzeb continued to attack other Maratha forts.
- At this critical moment, Tarabai led the Marathas.
- Tarabai appointed Balaji Vishwanath (who was a Brahmin) as a Peshwa (prime minister) to assist in managing the kingdom.
- 1707: Shivaji II’s cousin Shahu was released from the Mughla after the death of Aurangzeb.
- Sahu challenged Tarabai for the next king of the empire.
- 12 October 1707: Shahu defeated Tarabai in the Battle of Khed.
- Tarabai set up a small different court of the empire at Kolhapur.
- 1710-1714: Shivaji II served as king in this part (Kolhapur).
- 1714: Shivaji II’s stepmother Rajasbai dethrone him.
- 1714: Rajasbai put his son Sambhaji II on the throne of Kolhapur.
- 14 March 1726: At the age of 29 Shivaji II died of smallpox.
